Scaffolding Reinforcement

We seem to go in fits-and-spurts; the last few days have been quiet, as we have been awaiting the next stage in the repair effort.

Today, however, we have begun to move again.  The company that put up the scaffolding in the church has returned to reinforce it.  This is considered a vital step in the repair process.  With all of the debris that sits on top of the scaffolding, it is currently holding much greater weight than the amount for which it was designed.  Therefore, the scaffolding company is going to be "beefing up" the support structure, so it can hold the additional weight of the debris, plus the men who are going to be pulling the debris off of the scaffolding.

The work began today, and it should last through Monday.  No pictures at this point.

    Pippin -

We thought about it and talked about it, but at the end of the day there were innumerable problems with offering that, even though we know people would want them..

    (1) They were unsafe at this point, and our insurance company could be held liable for any accidents that occurred with them.
    (2) We had to remove them immediately from the church to continue repairs, but we had no place to store them until people could come pick them up.
    (3) We did not have the ability to allow people to come and pick out the pews that they wanted, since no one is allowed inside the church except the workers from the contracting companies.
    (4) In the past experience of the contractors, although people emotionally want to save their pews, when parishioners have to commit to taking them, they generally do not do so. One contractor had saved 8 ornate and beautiful pews from an earlier job, had restored them and made them available to the parishioners; four years later, he still has 6 of them, trying to unload them anywhere.

These are the most important of the objections that were raised that made the idea of allowing people to obtain the pews. We know the emotional attachment everyone has to our church, but this was considered the only safe and realistic option.

Why not think about selling the pews "as is" to folks who want to buy them?
