Latest News (Wednesday, 6/26)

Things are really starting to move, after a few weeks of a slower pace.  The difficulty with the repairs has been that a large number of things needed to be accomplished, but they depended on other things, which depended on other things, etc., and we were having trouble discovering where to begin.  A large "meeting of the minds" by the various companies and representatives of the different groups is scheduled for next week, to hammer out a more thorough schedule, but a preliminary order of action has been drafted and been implemented in the last couple of days.

  • First, part of the trim on the flooring around the church contains asbestos.  These tiles were not removed during the initial clean-up, since they are a hazardous material.  An abatement company, specializing in asbestos removal, visited the site today with a plan for removal.  We are hoping that the company will begin the removal as soon as tomorrow, and that in a week or so, the asbestos tiles will be gone from the church.
  • Once the asbestos trim has been removed, the pews can be removed from the church.  These will be cleaned and restored, and taken to a location for long-term storage.  Removing the pews is essential so that work on the scaffolding will not damage the pews below.
  • The scaffolding needs to be cleared of debris and to be reinforced.  This process cannot begin until what is below is protected (e.g., the pews).  Nevertheless, our builder may be bringing a crane onto our property, even this week, to help with the removal process.
  • Once the scaffolding has been reinforced, the necessary repair work to the pillar and the roof can begin.

What is good is that this sequence of events has been decided upon and has begun.  There will likely be a lot of activity at the church over the next few weeks.
