Corpus Christi

On Saturday, June 1st, St. Mary joined with the other parishes in our Corpus Christi cluster, St. Joseph and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, to celebrate an open-air Mass at the Major Parcel at Jillson Square, followed by a procession and Benediction, before concluding with a community dinner.  Hundreds of people braved 90-degree temperatures for the unique celebration of Corpus Christi.  In addition to the heat, the sunlight was very bright, causing a bit of difficulty for Fr. Red to be able to read the prayers from the Missal.

After the Mass, a Eucharistic procession was begun.  Fr. Red carried the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance up to the steps of St. Mary Church.  Following a hymn (the French translation of Immaculate Mary) and a prayer, Fr. Red blessed us all with the Blessed Sacrament.  We continued the procession to the steps of St. Mary-St. Joseph school (where Sagrado Corazon had set up their shrine) and the old St. Joseph school (where St. Joseph had set up their altar).  Finally we processed to St. Joseph church, where Fr. LaPointe led us in Benediction.

At each station (St. Mary, SMSJ for Sagrado Corazon, old St. Joseph school), the sponsoring parish was to erect an altar and a shrine to represent that parish.  We were extremely pleased to be welcomed by the statue of Our Lady from inside our church!  Decorators Mark and Carla repaired the statue, damaged in the fire and clean-up, and set it atop the stairs of our damaged church.  For all our parishioners, it was a wonderful sight to be greeted by our familiar statue on the steps of our church, surrounded by a beautiful shrine.

We finished up the evening with Benediction at St. Joseph church, and a big community dinner down in St. Joseph Hall.

All of us at St. Mary wish to thank all of those people who contributed toward making this first Corpus Christi cluster celebration successful.  The Mass was an enjoyable community experience, and the procession was very dignified and prayerful.  A wonderful time was had by all participants.  We look forward to working with our brothers and sisters at Sagrado Corazon and St. Joseph for future community events.
